Did you know each of your items has 14 little opportunities to be found, just waiting to be optimized? Those glorious brief gems are called "tags", Etsy's keywords. Since they are so important, I thought I'd focus this newsletter on tagging for success.

Guidelines & Tips: Tagging on Etsy

.
When searching for the perfect handmade, vintage, or supply item on Etsy, a shopper will browse Categories, or more often, use Search to find their items. Since tags are keywords for Search, and also used to organize items in Categories and Subcategories, it's important to understand how to tag your items correctly and effectively so that buyers can find them! This step-by-step guide will give you 13 ideas for good tags to help buyers find your item and help it get featured.

Tagging Rules

.

On step two of the item listing process, you're asked to categorize your item by adding 14 tags. Here are a few rules to keep in mind.
- Your very first tag relates to the item's category. So make sure your item is appropriate to that category.
- Is it a supply or vintage item not handmade by you? Tag it "commercial".
- Do not tag with potential uses. For example, don't tag yarn with sweater.
- Only one word for each tag, unless they are a common phrase, like sterling silver or forest green.

Tagging for Success

.

I found two more great tips from the article, "Tagging for Success":
When deciding what words to tag your items with, think about describing who the item is for (example: women, men, children, boy, girl, pets), and the major color(s) of the item. Both of these terms are frequently used in shoppers' searches.
One of my best tricks is thesaurus.com; this site is a great place to get new ideas for tags when you can't think of any more.

Danielle's Top Tagging Tips

.

1. Some shoppers might forget to use the drop-down search option to find you, so use your shop name as a tag. If you are a fine artist, known by your full name, use that as a tag as well. (Note: You don't have to do this for all your listings for this trick to be effective, just a couple.)

2. Make sure you are tagging with the appropriate style of your items. Is your style modern, classic, feminine, shabby chic, retro, traditional, country, contemporary, minimalist?

3. What tags are working for you? Find out by using Google Analytics. What keywords are shoppers searching to find you? Make sure to make good use of those!

Come on by the Virtual Labs this Thursday, July 23 at 4 p.m. ET for a live tagging workshop! I'll be covering these tips and more, and giving mini-tagging critiques. See you there!
