| February 27, 2010 Since the day I moved into my very first home, I have been dedicated to living an eco-friendly lifestyle. I began with small steps toward living green like switching to energy saving light bulbs, making my own natural cleaning products, supporting local businesses and buying organic locally grown produce. Once I realized how easy it was to adapt to these changes, I became interested in doing a lot more. Throughout the past few years I've switched my electricity to 100% wind power, got rid of my car, cut back on my consumption, reduced my waste and changed my eating habits from vegetarian to a 90% raw food diet which consists mostly of organic locally grown foods. With all that I've already done, I still feel I can be doing more, and am always looking for ways to take it to the next level. Next up on my list of ecofying my living space is a window farm to grow my own vegetables, compost bin to make my own soil and further reduce my trash, volunteering at local environmental organizations in my community and sharing my knowledge with others who are interested in learning about ways to lower their ecological footprint. Once you become more conscious about the way you live and eat, you'll be surprised by the effects your new lifestyle will have on your health, wallet and happiness. While a few of my choices may seem a bit extreme, there are also so many small steps you can take that will make a huge impact on the future of our planet. Spring CleaningCleaning products needn't contain harmful chemicals and toxic fumes to obtain a sparkling kitchen, window or bathroom. Many eco-friendly alternatives containing natural ingredients like baking soda and vinegar are readily available and much safer for your health as well as our earth. Friendly FashionsEco-friendly clothing doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your style. Major labels as well as independent designers have been introducing fashionable looks made from hemp, organic cotton, bamboo and soy to their clothing lines for men, women and children.
Reuse, Reduce, RecycleSmall changes can have a big impact on the future of our planet. Think about how much trash you dispose of in one day and focus on cutting that amount in half. Try carrying your own reusable travel mug when stopping at your local coffee shop and just say no to paper or plastic bags at your grocery market or even while shopping at the mall.
