Tangy lime margaritas, partner dancing, and trumpet blaring mariachi bands have come to be the most common associations with Cinco de Mayo. Often mistaken for Mexico's Independence Day, it commemorates a stunning Mexican military victory on May 5, 1862 over French forces at the Battle of Peubla. North of the border, Cinco de Mayo (much like St. Patrick's Day) has transformed into a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
