Miles of Stitches
Make a Quilt Label

As anyone who has ever stitched, admired, or snuggled with a quilt knows, quilting has a history steeped in resourcefulness, storytelling, community, and warmth. In honor of National Quilting Month, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, Amy Milne, the director of the Alliance for American Quilts, has penned a how-to project and a call for the importance of labeling quilts (and artworks of all kinds) for the sake of staking a spot in handmade history and taking pride and authorship in your craft.

Come Stitch Mini Quilts at Etsy Labs

When I look at Emily Fischer's quilts, my mind is drawn to the miles of stitches that make up her Soft-Maps, a project she started in 2002 as an academic exploration of "tactile wayfinding" when her mother began to lose her eyesight. Emily is the Brooklyn-based artist behind Haptic Lab, whose studio is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Etsy Labs in DUMBO. She'll be joining us at Craft Night on Monday to make quilted bracelets and impart some of her quilting wisdom.
