A LITTLE SEWING MAGIC
Measure twice. Haunt once.
Test marking tools on a scrap, remove pins before stitching over them and follow each tool’s instructions. A little prep makes your next project much sweeter.
YOUR NEXT LITTLE PROJECT
Make a patchwork Halloween mug rug
A little pumpkin-orange, a little midnight-black—and a useful place for your favorite cup.
Gather your supplies
Two contrasting cotton fabrics, a cotton backing, low-loft batting, matching thread, fabric scissors or a rotary cutter with ruler and mat, and pins.
Let’s make it
- Cut four 4½-inch cotton squares: two orange and two black. Arrange them as a checkerboard.
- Sew each row with a ¼-inch seam. Press the row seams in opposite directions, join the rows and press. Your top should measure 8½ inches square.
- Cut one 8½-inch backing square and one 8½-inch low-loft batting square. Stack batting, backing right side up, then pieced top right side down. Pin.
- Sew around the edge with a ¼-inch seam, leaving a 3-inch opening. Trim corner bulk without cutting the stitching, turn right side out and gently shape the corners.
- Press with the opening edges turned under. Topstitch ⅛ inch from the edge, closing the gap. Quilt through the layers following your batting maker’s maximum stitch spacing.
Finished size: approximately 8 inches square. Decorative mug rug, not a potholder or heat-protective trivet. Materials sold separately. Find Halloween fabric →
