Tech Updates: January 8, 2009 News Items

Etsy News

January 8, 2009

We had a number of announcements today and so we'll share the summaries of these news items below. Please check the links for full details.

Tech Updates: Item Status and Shipping Address Added to Sales Data CSV Download
We have updated the data that is available in sellers' CSV download file, available on the "Sold Orders" page in Your Etsy. You can use this info to more efficiently manage shipping and fulfillment.

Tech Updates: Feed Enhancements, Google Base and More
We've rolled out some small but important improvements to Etsy's RSS feeds. What's changed? Shop feeds now include thumbnail images; Favorites feeds are easier to find; RSS autodiscovery has been implemented throughout the site; Shop feeds now come pre-formatted for easy upload to Google Base, which enables sellers' items to appear in Google Product Search. For more info about RSS and Google Base / Google Product Search, see the post on the Etsy blog.

Newsflash from the Etsy Labs
As the New Year starts rolling in and the Etsy Labs' second birthday nears, we have decided to discontinue classes at the Etsy Labs, and instead partner with 3rd Ward to hold the classes at their wonderful facilities. This space is already home to the monthly Handmade Music Night. The last paid classes at Etsy will take place on January 25, 2009. (Last chance to sign up here.)

This decision reflects Etsy’s effort to focus even more energy on making our website, Etsy.com, the strongest, most wonderful handmade marketplace ever. To this end, we intend to use Etsy’s Virtual Labs as our main educational hub, where we are confident we can reach an even larger, global community of artists. We remain committed to using the Etsy Labs as a community space, and will continue to host our free weekly Craft Nights, monthly Church of Craft meetings, and other free happenings. We will also keep handmaking our own promotional goods and merchandise right here in downtown Brooklyn.

Tech Updates: Improvements to Seach
As announced in our previous News email, we launched Solr search technology on Etsy.com. This is just the first phase of continued efforts to improve Search.

CPSIA: Exemption Announcement, Resources & Action Items
For sellers of baby and children's items and toys, the CPSIA issue regarding safety testing requirements is an ongoing discussion. Today, promising announcements came from the CPSC, and it seems as though the rallying cries of handmakers and vintage sellers are being heard. The CPSC posted another open call for comments with a deadline of January 30th. Sellers of all kinds of items and supporters of independent craftspeople can find out more details here.

Happy New Year!
