Etsy Merchandising: More Than Just a Pretty Front Page

Etsy News

February 26, 2009

Etsy sellers,

As we stroll down the street, we've all felt the pull of elaborately designed storefront windows. Retailers beckon to us with their compelling windows and special in-store displays, enticing us to explore the treasures one can find within the the store. Similarly, Etsy has promotional spaces on the site that serve as our virtual storefront windows, to draw in visitors and encourage shoppers to discover the many treasures of our marketplace.

Stores dress their windows according to the seasons, holidays and life events that most people share. While Etsy would like to present shoppers with points of entry like these, we want to continue to develop that distinctiveness that comes from our marketplace — the unexpected, the fresh, the niche.

Recently, we've placed a stronger emphasis on overall site merchandising themes in areas like the front page, Gift Guides, Etsy Finds emails, blog articles, the addition of thematic front page rotational banners and illustrations incorporated throughout the site. To help formulate our merchandising strategies, we’re working with a merchandising consultant named Lou Sagar, here on Etsy as lsagar.etsy.com.

Please see the post on the Etsy blog for more about Lou, upcoming themes, and how to get involved. We hope you will join us for an Etsy Talk with Lou in the Virtual Labs on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 1:00 pm EST. Details here:

Thank you for your support as we continue to flesh out what merchandising means for Etsy. We welcome and encourage your involvement throughout the year.
