VIRTUAL LABS SCHEDULE

September 15, 2009

Hi again, sellers! I'm always suggesting newbies get involved with the Etsy Community. Why? You guys continually amaze me with your tips, insights and willingness to share. So if you haven't already, check out the Etsy Forums, Virtual Labs and our blog, The Storque (we've had over 800 contributors, many of them Etsy sellers, in the past 2 years!). And read on for a few highlights...

.Revisiting Your Photos
Past guest contributor, Caroline from PalomasNest wants you to ask yourselves these questions:
1. Are your photos consistent throughout your Etsy shop?
2. Do they lend a cohesive look to your brand and convey a strong sense of quality?
3. Pay attention to the various backgrounds or props you are using in your photos. Are they in line with your shop's style and the story you are telling through your work?

You may remember the Etsy Success Newsletter Caroline wrote. You can now get the full version of this piece in our blog here.

.Quit Your Day Job Tips
What did littlesaplingtoys
1. Economize — We projected our income and started to live on that amount.
2. Trial — On days off from school and the office, we worked full-time schedules to test our capabilities.
3. Education — We took all of the free classes at the local Small Business Development Center and were then eligible to use their free one-on-one counseling services.
4. Legalize — We got all of the licenses, permits, identifications and insurance that we needed.
do to prepare ahead of time?

To hear more from the husband and wife team behind littlesaplingtoys, read their entire interview here — or join us in the Virtual Labs for a live chat on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. ET.

.Revisiting Tagging
Did you notice the slight change in the tagging process? In the past, suggested subcategories appeared as "Related Tags." Now, we suggest subcategories relevant to your top-level category. We're also making it clearer that these suggestions are not only tags, but also directly relate to Categories. Why are we doing this? We believe this update will help reduce mistagging and confusion, and help make Categories more relevant. This update should make the item listing experience feel a little more logical. Learn more about this change here.

.Learning to License
Curious about sellers who have scored licensing deals? Becky from PoshDots, teacher, artist and mother of three, describes how a company approached her and struck a deal to have her design for her children's item manufactured. Read on for her time management tips, licensing insights and more!

Best,

Daniellexo
